In a written statement from the Egyptian Antiquities Authority, the ancient city, which is stated to be the largest administrative and industrial settlement in Luxor during the Egyptian Empire, was built by King III. It is stated that it was founded by Amenhotep 3 thousand years ago.
Pointing out that the walls of the city were found almost intact when it was discovered by the team in charge, the statement pointed out that there were tools used in daily life in the rooms of the ancient city.
Famous ancient Egypt expert Zahi Hawass announced the discovery of the “lost city of gold” near Luxor.
Hawass said the city, known as Aten, is the largest ancient city ever found in Egypt. The Aten was discovered after excavations began in September 2020. The history of the city dates back to the reign of Amenhotep III, who reigned from 1391 to 1353 BC and is considered one of Egypt’s most powerful pharaohs.
The city was also used during the periods of Pharaoh Ay and Tutankhamun.
Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings was found virtually intact in 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter.
“The discovery of this lost city is the greatest archaeological discovery since Tutankhamun’s tomb,” said Betsy Brian, Professor of Egyptology at Johns Hopkins University in the US.
Brian stressed that the city “will offer rare clues to the life of the Ancient Egyptians at the time the empire was at its most prosperous.”
A bakery, an administrative district and a residential district
Jewels, colorful pottery, amulets made from a sacred insect species and mud bricks bearing the seal of Amenhotep III were found during the excavation.
Archaeologists began their excavations on the west side of Luxor, 500 kilometers south of the capital, Cairo.
Dr. “Within weeks, mud-brick formations started to appear in every direction, surprising the team,” Hawaas said in a written statement. They uncovered a well-preserved large city with almost full walls and rooms filled with daily life tools.
Seven months after the excavations began, several neighborhoods were unearthed, including a bakery, an administrative district, and a residential district.
